CONAGUA’s Director General recognizes BECC’s work along the border

This recognition was mentioned at a working meeting held on April 8th with BECC’s Deputy General Manager Jose Mario Sanchez Soledad, where CONAGUA’s Deputy Director General Marco Antonio Velazquez and Advisor Coordinator Oscar Ibañez presented the water sustainability vision for the Rio Bravo, Northeast, and Baja California regions, in the context of Agenda 2030.

Agenda 2030 is a benchmark for the long-term strategy of what has been called “the launching of a water sustainability policy” in the Mexico. It was presented at a ceremony with Mexican President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa on March 22nd, as a key part of the 2011 World Water Day celebration.

In addition to the discussion of regional strategies at the BECC-CONAGUA meeting, it was reported that more refined regional water plans are being developed to help guide the assessment of city, state, and regional investment needs in the water sector.

On of the agreements at the meeting was that both intitutions will organize a Webinar workshop in June to present Agenda 2030, directed to the water utilities of the Mexican border. Mr Sanchez highlighted that such approach will help ensure that these utilities have substantive water-related elements based on a long-term perspective.

Jose Mario Sanchez said that “the border has a regional development bank and a certifying organization that facilitates capacity building for border communities, and we are a worthy ally for the Agenda 2030 to become a reality and translate into specific infrastructure investments and projects.”

CONAGUA Director General Jose Luis Luege pointed out that in this long-term vision, coordination with the BECC and the North American Development Bank is of utmost importance, and instructed his staff to maximize the use of the instruments made available by these organizations for the development of the different Agenda 2030 actions along the border.
